NO Hacks or Shortcuts

When someone starts their keto journey with me, we focus on simplicity: begin with whole foods, cut out the starches, sugars, alcohol, grains and processed food, add in high levels and variety of fats, and make sure to salt food and use electrolytes!

My favorite salt is @redmondrealsalt and my favorite electrolyte supplement thus far is @drinklmnt.

When people look for hacks, shortcuts and quick fixes, they run into problems because they overlook simple steps mentioned above.

My role is to guide my clients, and share with all of you, how to implement e ketogenic diet/lifestyle the most efficient, effective, and healthy way possible.

Keto Flu

Have you had “keto flu”? I experienced it when I first set out on a ketogenic journey. I also lacked a ton of simple education in regards to navigating the adaptation process and how to avoid or lessen the effects of the keto flu.

Electrolytes, specifically sodium, can have a massive positive effect on how we feel and function even if we’re not following a ketogenic diet and lifestyle.

Brands like @realsaltketo and @drinklmnt are my choices of getting in extra sodium in my day. I have zero affiliation with them and purchase their products myself because @jciake and I believe in consuming the best quality foods and supplements.

On the note of quality supplements, another tool you can add to the keto arsenal to avoid anything but optimal levels of brian performance is exogenous ketones.

@justpruvit makes the only bio-available, naturally fermented, and free-acid forms of exogenous (external) ketones. If you choose the salt (powder) form, you’ll get the added benefits of sodium along with the ketones.

Exogenous ketones help keto newcomers to adapt by increasing/multiplying “MCT transporters”, which are basically tunnels shuffling ketones from our blood to our cells for energy.

I’ll be sharing more about WHY @justpruvit for exogenous ketones and the benefits of exogenous ketones soon!

Keto Choices

Choices people, CHOICES.

Keto is NOT hard, unsustainable, or unhealthy.

You know what’s hard?

Suffering from a disease. Having your skull cut open to remove a tumor trying to kill you. Dealing with cancer. Loosing someone in your life. Feeling physical pain from things that could be avoided.

The list goes on.

That said, there’s a ton of context involved around those statements and it’s why I do all I do. From coaching to speaking, to investing my time, money, and energy into creating content that brings you all value.

All my efforts are context based and I believe we all have potential the become as healthy, happy, and successful as we believe we can become.

It’s all in our choices.

If anyone wants to prioritize the health of their brain and allow it to perform better and become more resilient to disease, utilizing the power of ketones as a tool and/or lifestyle can be a game changer.

There’s also a ton of support for body composition, energy, recovery, inflammation, oxidative stress, and so much more from ketones themselves along with the consciousness of all areas of life that keto has shown me.

Here’s an example of a dialed keto meal taken from Eastern: lamb, Brussels, and a zucchini boat stuffed with an artichoke spinach dip.

Some clean protein, non-starchy veggies, and plenty of fats.

Don’t Go Chasing Numbers

Don’t go chasing numbers while on KETO.

Why?

Although it’s a great tool in the beginning, it doesn’t always contain all the needed context required to asses progress with the goal of being in KETOSIS- Fat/Keto adaptation.

I track numbers (Ketones, Glucose & Macros) from time to time now that I’ve been on this path for some time. I use Keto-mojo to check my levels and Cronometer for my macros when I do track. It’s a great tool but not the only tool to measure success.

The goal isn’t ketosis. That can be achieved with fasting, exogenous ketones, which I use (PerfectKeto code: “JoshPerry”), MCT oil (I use Garden of Life), or depleting glycoen stores from vigorous workouts.

The goal is keto-adaptation and metabolic flexibility, meaning you take the time to lower the insulin and glucose levels/stores in your body over time and you adapt to producing and utilizing ketones efficiently.

Again, there are various ways to get into ketosis but it takes time to adapt the brain and body to this alternative and superior fuel source.

Once keto-adapted and metabolically flexible, you can enjoy the benefits that keto brings with it like body composition improvements, mental clarity and energy, reduction in inflammation and oxidative stress (free radicals), liberation from hunger and cravings, improved sports performance and recovery, and reduced risk of diseases or disease/symptom management.

You can also consume sensible “smart-carbs” and amounts, once keto-adapted and gained some metabolic flexibility, at specific times of the day and it’ll help your performance, fat burning, and sometimes put you deeper into ketosis.

Again, once KETO-ADAPTED.

Don’t worry if you have lower numbers because that may mean you’re body is becoming more efficient at utilizing ketones as you build more MCT transporters to shuttle the ketones into the cells. 💚✌️
