Purpose Driven

Being diagnosed 3 times with 5 total tumors, among other obstacles like blowing out my knee after treatment, living out of my car for a few months, overcoming depression, being abused most my childhood by a drunken step-father, breaking ribs after my third diagnosis, and flat lining on the bottom of a contest course all has led me down a deep path of self-exploration and auditing who I was, the choices I was making, and ultimately who I wanted to become.

I’d tell you were crazy had you told me what I would accomplish today, the parts of the world I’d see, and who I’d become when I was 17, just dropped out of high school, and left home in pursuit of a dream to become a professional BMX athlete. But, looking back on the last 12 years of my life makes sense as to why I was able to do so. It all stemmed from a vision I had created for my life and the tenacity to not give up.

I believe we all have the same choice in our lives and that’s our perspective, which no one can take from us. It’s a choice we are faced with on a daily basis. It’s not always easy but it’s worth putting the effort in to become aware of our thoughts and focus on improving them. I could have very easily chosen the perspective of a victim and had given up on more than a handful of occasions and no one would have ever batted an eye.

But, for what purpose?

How would that help me?

It wouldn’t and thankfully my vision wouldn’t allow that choice as these experiences have given me clarity with my purpose to SERVE others🙏🏼

We all have the same choice in life….our PERSPECTIVE and the vision we create for ourselves.

I’m just a kid from Cape Cod with no money, no upper hand, and a lot of odds stacked against me.

I could have chosen a path of fear disguised by practicality but I chose a path dictated by my vision even though others said it wasn’t possible.

If I can succeed, so can you!

Tagged are the people who inspire me daily🔥🙌🏼

ACL & Keto

I returned riding after ACL surgery a week shy of 4 months in spring of 2016.

It wouldn’t have been possible if my knee wasn’t half as swollen as most patients with that kind of reconstructive surgery come out with.

I contribute my speedy recovery to all the prehab work I did 2 months prior to surgery with Jackie as well as the ketogenic diet that I wasn’t aware I was following at the time. I just thought I was just high-fat and low-carb. What I didn’t know that by my taking it to the next level with cutting out all things that raised my blood sugar and/or inflammation (starches, sugars, grains, alcohol, dairy, etc.) that I was probably ketogenic for a good portion of that pre-hab.

This photo is of a 720 barspin that took the @davemirra best trick and I ended up winning the main contest too.

I went on to place 3rd at my first @fise world championship contest and ended up 10th overall in the world even tho I missed 1 of 5 events.

That surgery and 2016 contest season was one of the greatest times of my life and all the hard work and dedication paid off more than I imagined.

It was also my last year competition and I’m beyond grateful to have ended my last year in competition with such a positive mark.

Top Keto Protein

What are your favorite protein sources?🤔

Quality over quantity when it comes to protein, especially while following a ketogenic diet and lifestyle.🌀

As you adapt to burning fat over time while following a ketogenic diet, your body’s need for higher levels of protein lessens as it becomes more efficient at utilizing amino acids (building blocks of protein) thanks to less oxidation of protein. You also become more sensitive to the amino acid “leucine”, one of the most important amino acid for protein synthesis. 💪🏽

Here are my favorites when it comes to protein sources that are not in the powdered form, which I also use but mainly in the forms of bone broth protein and collagen protein.

It’s Over

Have you ever been told “you’re going to die”?

I have and it’s not fun.

What’s cool is that those words in that order will change your perspective on life and how you’re navigating through it.

For me, I saw the opportunity I still had at hand to preserve my life. Recently, my younger brother passed away and it’s had me down and challenging my beliefs.

If anything positive has come from the death of my brother, which is f***ed to even think about, is that it’s given me another wave of gratitude to be alive and surrounded by so much love and abundance.

I share all I share to inspire change in perspective in all of us to see how much positivity we have in our lives, no matter what we have going on. Not everyone is as fortunate as we all are in this very moment to wake up and live another day or to “fail” again and again.

No matter what you’re going through, shit could always be worse if you’re breathing. Think about that long and hard.

I think about that when I face times like today when I am heart broken, questioning why I’m still here and Danny is not, questioning “do I even want to ride BMX anymore”, and feeling like giving up.

Then I remember I’m alive and Danny wouldn’t want me to quit and so many people count on me to stay strong for them.

I’ve learned many things along my journey and one quite that’s given me a lot of clarity on my path is “off self, on purpose” that @isaacstegman shared with me.

Anytime I get down, I remember what my purpose is and tell myself to lift my head up and continue striving to better my life and the lives of others.

Thanks so much @kerwinrae for coming into my life and doing more for me than you probably are aware of. 🙏🏼

Saturated Fat

“It’s hard to imagine how dietary saturated fat can be problematic when it is promptly burned to carbon dioxide & water.” -Dr.’s Jeff Volek & Stephen Phinney

There is no current evidence of associations between dietary saturated fat intake & cardiovascular disease. Circulating saturated fat in the blood, however, shows consistency of increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

During a high-fat/low-carb diet, also known as a ketogenic diet, the individual becomes fat-adapted in time. That is, as long as they don’t “cheat” with excesses carbs/sugar & stay patient as the body’s metabolism shifts from sugar-burning to predominantly fat-burning.

As the quote above states, it’s hard to have circulating saturated fat levels when you become efficient as metabolizing fats for fuel.

What’s also interesting about this book is that they show & discuss the breakdown of particular fat makeup that the body likes to store as a triglyceride (fat) in the body’s adipose tissue. This allows us to understand what the body likes to burn for fuel when there’s no food.

The break down shows 55% monounsaturated (nuts, avocado, olive oil), 27% saturated (animal foods & coconut oil), & 18% polyunsaturated fats (nuts, eggs, fresh water cold fish, micro algae).

Overall, a good mix of healthy fats while avoiding canola, soy, & corn oils is a general good way to approach a ketogenic diet.

Forget Your Limitations

What we focus on, we attract more of in our lives, “good” or “bad”.

If you focus on limitations, past “failures”, times you fell down, or the inability to accomplish a goal before even setting out on the journey to accomplishing it, you’ll attract more limiting beliefs that are not true but prove yourself right.

This concept can be applied to health, career, sports, relationships, creativity, and virtually everything.

If we focus on what’s limiting us from reaching a goal(s), then we rob ourselves of the potential of gaining clarity around a possible option or solution, or even crushing our goal(s).

We give up before we even try.

I have seen this in my own life many times and it still comes up. The difference is that I now carry around an awareness or “alarm system” for these limiting beliefs and I trace back the thoughts that create them and create new ones.

Easier said than done, but so worth the effort.

What’s your take on limiting beliefs and how do you move forward when you notice one?

“Brinner”

Breakfast for dinner anyone?

Nutrition doesn’t need to be complicated as I used to think.

By eating real, whole food and drinking more water, anyone can make improvements to their health and wellness.

Taking it a step further by eliminating sugars, grains, alcohol, and starches while adding in full-fat foods can boost your brains health and body composition tremendously.

How is this so?

In short, when you eat very low carb and higher fat your body switches over from running on carbs/sugar to running primarily on fat. This is known as a ketogenic diet.

When you initiate this process, you become efficient at burning fat (dietary & body) and start producing what’s called “ketones” a metabolic state known as “Ketosis”. These ketones help fuel damaged brains, help starve off cancers and tumors, reduce inflammation, can help reduce/eliminate seizures, signal genes to turn on or off, increase insulin sensitivity so you utilize the energy you consume rather than storing it, increase energy, sleep, and recovery, and much more.

I follow this way of eating as I prioritize my brains health. By doing so, my body composition has improved and my clients health have transformed tremendously.

Don’t Judge A Books Cover

“Don’t judge a book by its cover” resonates with me more and more today.

I don’t have a weight loss story that led me to a ketogenic lifestyle.

I battled multiple brain tumors, concussions, depression, anxiety, and stress over the course of my lifetime and still do today.

Yeah, KETO can help with weight loss, no doubt! But, I’ve learned that health is more than physical appearances and is internal.

I learned that the hard way and it’s why I share all I share. So YOU don’t need a doctor telling you that “you will die” if you don’t make changes. Sometimes, that isn’t even an opportunity because it’s too late.

Don’t wait until a diagnosis, illness, injury, or until it’s too late to consider the health of your brain and prioritize the choices you make in your day to day. 🙏🏼

Thanks To My Health

Thanks to my health, I’ve been able to have a positive influence by sharing my experiences and what’s worked well for me in an effort to inspire action for change in others that empowers them to be as healthy, happy, and successful as possible.

I set out to become a professional BMX athlete when I was 17, dropped out of high school, and moved 13hrs south to Greenville, NC to train with the best.

My journey with health began when I was 21 (2010) and told I would die unless I had my skull cut open to remove a massive brain tumor.

Being on my own for the first time and having a sense of “freedom” led me down a poor lifestyle full of toxic choices. These choices included drinking at a young age, late nights, copious amounts of sugar consumption, and thinking because I was young and told all of my life that I was “healthy” that I didn’t need to worry about my choices, which ultimately manifested in the form of a brain tumor.

That brain tumor diagnosis was a wake up call and the catalyst to my passion for nutrition and exercise, specifically a ketogenic lifestyle. It’s also what led me to adopt the phrase “discipline equals freedom” and prioritize the health of my brain by educating myself and making healthy choices.

@davidperlmutter book “Grain Brain” was the spark to me following a high-fat/low-carb diet and improving my health dramatically. It’s allowed me to become even more empowered and share the love with others so they could experience the benefits too!

It’s been an honor to collaborate with @gardenoflife and @davidperlmutter over the years and I’m beyond stoked of the “Brain Health” line they recently released 🙌🏼🙏🏼

I took a step away from competition last year to focus on fulfilling my purpose of helping others by starting a ketogenic health coaching business.

I work with business owners and company teams that are looking to remove excess body fat, improve their energy, sleep, and their brains health and performance.

I believe health is internal and starts with our choices.

BMX Taught Me Valuable Lessons

BMX taught me discipline, perspective, hard-work pays off, get up and try again, you get what you put in, face your fears, the importance of setting goals, and the possibilities of what following your heart can do and where it can bring you in life.

Had I not followed my heart and took a chance on my dreams, I’d most likely be stuck in Massachusettes with the regret of not taking the chance of a lifetime and always wondering “what if”.

I love sharing my story to inspire others to change their perspective of what’s possible based on their inner desires and the journeys of those like myself that challenged the status quo and carved their own path in life when others said it wouldn’t be possible.

I’m just a kid from Cape Cod with a dream that never gave up and didn’t have any advantages in life rather I had a lot of odds against me.

I’m grateful for my parents support and belief in my choices, the love and support from all of you, the obstacles I’ve overcome and lessons I’ve learned, and what’s to come into my life moving forward.

Take a chance on what you love rather than settling for complacency dictated by fear. You never know who you’ll inspire or what positivity you’ll attract in your life.
