Stress is a major factor in why we as a society are sick, fat, and tired. ๐Ÿ˜•

Whether it be perceived (mental) or physical stressors (toxins, certain foods, exercise, injuries, etc.), the mind and body are so closely intertwined that either form of stress creates a physiological response in the body as seen here in the diagram thanks to Dr. Ryan Lowery ๐Ÿค“

When I began this journey of holistic health, it was based on fear of the brain tumor coming back. The irony of that is that 4 more grew back over the following 7 years after brain surgery.
ย 
My journey led me to nutrition first, which I believed was the single most important choice we have on a daily basis.๐Ÿฅ‘
ย 
Then a torn ACL injury & surgery led me to the importance of fitness for the brain and body.๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ
ย 
Along the way, I was learning more about keto as well as the power of our mindsets and subconsciously picking up on new ways of thinking.๐Ÿง 
ย 
Today, I believe the mind(set) is actually the single most important choice we have on a daily basis, closely followed up by nutrition and fitness. The mind(set) came last for me and I believe it was for a few reasons:
ย 
1- to show me my strength through the physical challenges.
ย 
2- those challenges gave me clarity on perspective & purpose.
ย 
3- I was building my mind(set) strength the whole time and now that Iโ€™m conscious to it, I am able to tie all 3 parts of holistic health together and share with all of you.

Keto Doesnโ€™t Require Tons Of Fat.

Thereโ€™s a misconception that Keto requires a ton of fat at every meal.

When youโ€™re first beginning your ketogenic diet & lifestyle journey, youโ€™ll be adding WAY MORE fat than most are used to consuming, which brings mindset obstacles, such as conditioning to believe fat makes us fat, to the surface.

Thatโ€™s entirely false, while in the right context. When starches, sugars, & high-levels of carbohydrates are absent, fat allows our brains & bodies to thrive.

Again, while starting out on a ketogenic diet there will be an adjustment period that requires you to fuel your body with fat to satiety, thus meaning youโ€™ll most likely be eating a fair amount of fat. But, once fat-adapted, you start to notice shifts in hunger, energy levels, mental clarity, weight removing, & improved sleep & digestion & no longer require a ton of fat at every meal.

The adaptation process takes time & is different for each individual.

The other piece of context is โ€œwhat is your goalโ€? If youโ€™re trying to maintain weight, or bulk, once fat-adapted, then youโ€™re probably going to need a lot more fat at each meal (or in total for the day) then someone whoโ€™s trying to remove weight & body fat.

This meal represents effort to cut some body fat % as Iโ€™m fat adapted= not so much fat๐Ÿ”ฅ

Itโ€™s all in context to the individuals goals & needs. Thereโ€™s no one size fits all here.

Burn Fat

๐Ÿ”ฅIf you want to burn body fat, you gotta eat fat. ๐Ÿ˜‹ And, limit/temporarily eliminate starches, sugars, and amounts of carbohydrates to reach your goals.

We’ve been brain washed to believe fat makes us fat and we NEED carbohydrates to stay alive and fuel our brains and bodies.๐Ÿ™ˆ

๐Ÿค“The science is in…carbs are not essential for life and fat doesn’t make us fat, in the presence of low insulin levels and fat-adaptation. High levels of insulin makes us fat, which is a result from eating too many carbohydrates and not burning the glucose. ๐Ÿค“

In short, insulin is secreted when carbohydrates are consumed. Insulin buffers glucose (blood sugar from breaking down carbs) to cells for energy (or storage as fat) as well as amino acids (protein) for muscle synthesis.๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ

When we have chronic high levels of insulin, we are what’s referred to as “sugar burners” and fat-burning comes to a halt.๐Ÿ˜ข

๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸฝCarbs can be a tool if consumed appropriately for our goals. They’re not the enemy. There just needs to be an understanding for the biology behind carbohydrate consumption and clarity around our goals and what it takes to manifest those goals.

๐Ÿ”ฅIf you want to burn fat, you gotta lower insulin levels, eat more fat, and initiate the adaptation process to become fat & keto-adapted.

Following a ketogenic lifestyle is the best way to burn fat efficiently, enjoyably, and it also supports your brain.

Second Chances

I had a large brain tumor taking over my life and 4 currently trying.

Health is internal.

I learned the hard way after a BMX crash led to a life-saving MRI where they found the first tumor taking over half my brain.

Wrapped around an artery and my optic nerve, the surgery complications led to a 6hr surgery. When I woke up, it was the best moment in my life.

Almost like second chance.

For the first time in about a year or so, I wasnโ€™t in pain and could see, hear, and move my body after signing paperwork acknowledging all those risks on top of death being a possibility.

The story doesnโ€™t end there and to be short, Iโ€™ve been diagnosed 2 more times since the original surgery leaving me with a total of 4 tumors in my skull today. 2 in which shrunk thanks to Gamma Knife and the other 2 havenโ€™t progressed since changing my life.

The last 8 years of experiences have led me to a ketogenic diet and lifestyle, learning about the importance of mindset, perspective, choices, the ego, and consciousness, and has given me clarity around my purpose.

BMX Saved My Life

BMX has been a life saver, literally. Not only did it keep me out of trouble as I grew up and on a goal orientated path, but it also saved my life from what could have been a negative situation- hitting my head. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

That crash led to an MRI that accidentally found a massive brain tumor taking over half my brain. That was 8 years ago and I still ride today, despite having 4 brain tumors today.๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ

My belief is our mindset is everything in life. Whether it’s health, business, relationships, school, etc., the mindset is what leads to actions that manifest our realities one way or another.๐ŸŒ€

When I was diagnosed, I was 21 and alone in the doctor’s office. The 3 weeks following leading up to surgery I could have mentally given up and become a victim to life but my family support, BMX community support, and my vision for my life kept me on a path of survivorship full of love and gratitude.โค๏ธ

This journey has led me to opening my eyes to new ways of living and eating (ketogenic lifestyle) to take control of my health and support others in their life journey. If it wasn’t for that crash 8 years ago and hitting my head, i’d be dead or living a victim lifestyle full of spite, anger, and jealousy rather than today and living in a state of gratitude, love, and a desire to help others. ๐Ÿ’šโœŒ๏ธ

BMX Introduced Me To Keto

BMX led me to Keto.

After multiple brain injuries, brain tumor diagnosis, and childhood trauma, I’ve been led to the ketogenic diet and lifestyle.

In short, a ketogenic diet turns your metabolism over from sugar burning to fat burning. It’s by-products, “ketones”, are able to pass the blood-brain barrier to provide an alternative and superior fuel source for the brain.

Sometimes, trauma to the brain can led the brain to become glucose-impaired, which means the brain can’t successfully utilize glucose (blood sugar) for energy even when carbohydrates are consumed.

For me, my journey with keto wasn’t about weight or body composition. It was and is about the health of my brain. Of course, body composition, sustained energy, recovery, stress management, and other cognitive benefits have occurred from prioritizing the health of my brain because a ketogenic lifestyle is about prioritizing health.

One of the things this journey living with 4 brain tumors has taught me is that health is internal. Not numbers on a scale or outside appearances. I’m a walking example of that.

Had I continued down the path of calculating health solely via numbers and physical appearance, and not fallen and hit my head that day, I wouldn’t be alive today. For that, I’m forever grateful to have such adversities that I see as opportunities. ๐Ÿ’šโœŒ๏ธ

Courage Is A Choice.

It’s a willingness to trust the process and have faith in our efforts manifesting the results we seek.

Nothing in this life is guaranteed. All that’s guaranteed is that time goes on and if you never try, you’ll regret what could have resulted from giving it a shot.

I’ve been crippled by fear of the unknown and see so many people with so much potential fall short of their greatness they have to offer the world by fearing the unknown.

Whether it’s health goals, a career, sports, relationships, etc., it’s a journey that requires constant effort, belief, and and acceptance of patience. ๐Ÿ’šโœŒ๏ธ

This journey taught me 3 things:

Adapt Your Life Speech

Honored and privileged to speak at Dr Eric Westman’s Keto Summit last weekend. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

I got to show my recent video for Gladiator Mouthguards thanks to Madicarus Media before I went on the stage. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

I shared my story of ditching school and my job when I was 17 to move to North Carolina for my BMX dream, and how a crash one day saved my life because it revealed a massing tumor taking over my brain. Had I not fallen, I’d be dead after suffering even more than I already had. ๐ŸŒ€

I shared about how Gamma Knife Radio Treatment shrunk 2 re-occurring tumors due to the original tumor wrapping around an artery and my optic nerve.

I shared how this whole brain tumor experience led me to a ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting, and adopting it as a new way of life for me after I was diagnosed for a third time in 2017 with 2 additional tumors on the opposite side of my brain.

Today, I live with 4 brain tumors, coach others, speak around the world, and ride BMX at the same level as I did when I made top ten in the UCI x Fise WORLD Tour in 2016 as my last year competing.๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ

Exercise=Health

Exercise isn’t all about strength, bulk, or what gym or equipment you use.๐Ÿ’ฏ

๐ŸŒ€It’s about overall health and well-being, as well as a great tool to ramp up the fat & keto-adaptation process while following a ketogenic diet and lifestyle. It’s also great for the mind as it’s proven to relieve stress and facilitate new mitochondrial growth (mitochondrialbiogenisis) that supports energy production and reduced risk of disease. ๐Ÿค“

๐Ÿ˜ŽYou don’t need to do Olympic lifts to become a fat-burning machine or to get healthy, lean, and fit. I enjoy this style of training and it compliments my BMX riding. Don’t get intimidated by this video thinking you need to workout how I work out to get results.๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ

Basic functional body movements with some sort of regular resistance (weights or just body weight) training is just fine to burn up stored carbohydrates (glucogen) as well as lingering glucose/insulin levels to facilitate ketones production (in the liver) and fat-burning mode on top of a proper formulated nutrional intake.๐Ÿ”ฅ

If you want to burn fat, you gotta lower insulin levels, burn up lingering glucose (blood sugar), & eat more fat to initiate the adaptation process to become fat & keto-adapted.

Following a ketogenic lifestyle is the best way to burn fat efficiently, enjoyably, & it also supports your brain. Then comes basic, full-body, functional movements.๐Ÿ’šโœŒ๏ธ
