Leadership Journey Speech

I was invited to the University of Florida to give a talk about what leadership means to me, how I  led my own life to manifest my dreams, and how I turned a plethora of adversities into a business today.

Here is a cut of the talk I gave minus the beginning part of me breaking down what leadership means to me. If you’re interested in that, read below!

Good evening, everyone. It’s great to be here at UF again and I want to thank Ben for inviting me back.

My name is Josh Perry. I’m a former pro BMX athlete and today I am going to share my journey of how I led my own life to manifest my dreams and turn a plethora of adversities into a business.

I am also going to share a bit about what leadership means to me and ultimately what I have learned from the last 29 years of my life, actually going on 30 in exactly one week from today.

I want to give you guys some context of where I started and came from to open up the floor for some Q&A because I love Q&A and I want to bring you all as much value as I possibly can with the limited time we have.

I want to start off by saying thank you all for your valuable time. I never imagined I would be where I am today and it’s truly an honor and privilege to be here sharing my life with all of you. It’s my hope that my story and all I have to share with you will help bring you all value and clarity on how you are all leaders and that there’s no set path to becoming one.

When you look at me, you see a healthy human being, right? But what you don’t see is what’s on the inside and you’d probably never guess I have anything internally wrong.

What if I told you I live with 4 tumors in my skull today? Would you believe me? Well, I do and now find myself as a living example of the famous saying “don’t judge a book by its cover”.

I share that part of my story because I believe health is internal, not numbers on a scale or piece of paper, which I learned the hard way. It’s my mission to inspire that perspective in others to empower them to take accountability for their health and overall quality of life so that they can become the healthiest, happiest, & most successful versions of themselves without suffering or given a death sentence to make changes.

When you’re told a brain tumor is slowly killing you as it occupies half of your brain, AND, you WILL DIE, unless they cut open your skull to remove that tumor, your priorities and perspectives in life begin to shift really fast.

That’s exactly what happened to me as I was diagnosed with a massive brain tumor just after turning 21 and living out my dream. I’d been told that I was healthy all of my life up until that moment so that diagnosis left me feeling confused, angry, and thinking I must have been a bad person or done something to deserve this. It didn’t help that I was alone for that diagnosis or that the doctor told me I’d never ride my bike again.

My experiences of being diagnosed 3 separate times, totaling 5 different tumors, among other obstacles like blowing out my knee, living out of my car, overcoming depression, being abused most of my childhood by a drunken step-father, and flat lining on the bottom of a contest course all has led me down a deep path of self exploration and auditing who I am, the choices I’ve made in my life, and ultimately who I wanted to become.

I’d tell you were crazy had you told me what I would accomplish today, the parts of the world I’d see, and who I’d become when I was 17, just dropped out of high school, and left home in pursuit of a dream to become a professional BMX athlete. But, looking back on the last 12 years of my life makes sense as to why I was able to do so. It all stemmed from a vision I had created for my life and the tenacity to not give up.

I believe we all have the same choice in our lives and that’s our perspective, which no one can take from us. It’s a choice we are faced with on a daily basis. It’s not always easy but it’s worth putting the effort in to become aware of our thoughts and focus on improving them. I could have very easily chosen the perspective of a victim and had given up on more than a handful of occasions and no one would have ever batted an eye.

But, for what purpose? How would that help me? It wouldn’t and my vision wouldn’t allow that choice.

I love sharing these 2 quotes that go with this belief.

1) Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we respond

&

2) Life doesn’t happen to us, it happens for us…

Both quotes come from different people but detail the same choice, a choice in perspective and how we see the world and the events that take place in our lives.

Simon Sinek says a great leader has a clear vision of the world that does not currently exist & an ability to communicate this vision. I also believe a leader is someone who wants others to succeed and has the following 3 traits….

  1. Authenticity– following your heart, being yourself, sharing what you believe, and walking your talk, even when no one is looking.
  1. Trust– providing a sense of trust and loyalty to others and showing them you truly care so they feel safe.
  1. Serving– sharing and bringing others value and support so they can become as successful as possible.

Notice nowhere in there did I say in order to become a leader you must have a sense of power or “leverage”. What I have learned from my own experiences and from other leaders is that being a great leader is all about sharing our beliefs, bringing others value, and aligning all of our actions with our WHY, or our purpose.

“There are leaders and those who lead. Leaders hold a position of power or influence. Those who lead inspire us. We follow those who lead not because we have to, but because we want to. We follow those who lead not for them but for ourselves.” Another great quote from Simon Sinek.

As Ben has shared with me, I know most, if not all of you, are familiar with Simon Sinek’s book “Start With WHY” and the examples of leaders he uses. So, I won’t say much else about what makes up a great leader. But, I will share a bit about my journey and how I ended up here today.

Drink Your Fat

Do you drink your fat?

We all know that our morning cup of coffee can get us moving, but how long does that quick energy boost really last? Usually, by late morning or early afternoon, the dreaded “crash” makes its way into our day leading to unhealthy choices like too much caffeine or sugar overload.

Instead, adding “healthy fats” to your morning cup can provide more sustained energy as these fats are the most energy packed macronutrient and can support your fat-burning machinery.

I use @wildfoodsco coffee & 🍄powder (code “WILDJOSH12” for 12% off entire order) and @perfectketones MCT oil powder (code “JoshPerry” for 15% off entire order) for those 🧠 boosting ketones🔥

Drinking fat made all the world of a difference for my energy levels and ability to effortlessly begin my fasting routine. It has also helped me add in the fats required for nutritional ketosis when I first began my keto journey and couldn’t fathom adding in even more fat and where to add it.

Drinking your fat can supply you with a “fat fast”, which aligns with a ketogenic diet and lifestyle but also helps curb hunger and allows you to adjust to a strict intermittent fasting routine. Consuming fat to start your day, minus carbs and protein, can improve your mental focus, energy, clarity, and help reduce inflammation that comes with a traditional westernized meal of grains, fruit, juices, sugar, etc.

So #drinkyourfat ladies and gents!

Love Over Fear

Fear is just a thought and thoughts can be changed with perspective. Which perspective you choose is YOUR ChOICE.

“You will only ever have two choices: love or fear. Choose love and don’t ever let fear turn you against your playful heart” – Jim Carrey 💚❤️

Far too often do I hear people give me all kinds of excuses as to why they are unhappy, suffering, and/or didn’t/don’t follow their dreams or passions in life.🙈

Bottom line, it’s your perceptive.🧐

It’s because of fear. Fear of failure or failure again, fear of the unknown, fear of what others may say or think, fear of even succeeding and what that’ll do to our life, and so on. I’ve been there, many times. Any successful person has.

The difference?

Gratitude, love, and a choice to not let fear dictate your life.🌀

Whether it’s a health and fitness goal, a business/career goal, personal and family, sports, etc. related goal, prescribe is everything!💯

I encourage you all to figure out what it is you love to do most, WHY that is so, and how to make that a regular habit in your life while ditching the excuses. Life’s way more pleasant that way. 🙏🏼

Fuel Your Soul

I believe we all MUST find something to do in our lives that fuels our soul.

That’s what BMX has been for me for more than half my life. Just typing that is crazy!

17 years now I’ve been on a BMX bike & it’s crazy how much the decision to pursue BMX as a career has taught me, the places around the world it’s brought me to, the people & experiences it’s led me to, & the ability it has to clear my mind & bring a smile to my face.

More importantly, it’s saved my life in more ways than one & is what’s helped me find the ketogenic diet & lifestyle that I believe can be a massively beneficial tool or a new way of living for most of us today as it has been for me & my clients.

It’s not a magic pill as most of us look for these days. I’m not 100% pro-Keto or 100% against other healthy approaches that do work for others.

My priority of adopting such a lifestyle is for the health, protection, & healing of my brain thanks to those fat burning by-products called KETONES. It’s a 100% personal choice.

My story and journey with Keto isn’t a weight loss story, although my body composition has never been better as well as easier to maintain. My journey with Keto represents my belief of health being internal.

Along the way, I’ve become passionate for sharing what’s helped me with others & I continue to do so because I want all of you to become the healthiest, happiest, & most successful versions of yourself.

We All Have This Choice

I believe we all have the same choice in life when things go poorly or well.

It’s a choice that no one can take from us.🙏🏼

It’s a choice in perspective. To choose to see life as glass half full or glass half empty.

To choose to become a survivor rather than a victim.💪🏽

Two quotes I love are:

1- life doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you.

2- life is 10% what happens to us and 90% now we react.

That said, if you’re unhappy for any reason then I’d check your perspective. 🧐

Are you a survivor or a victim?

Stress

How do you alleviate stress in your life? 🌀

Stress is a major factor in why we as a society are sick, fat, and tired. 😕

Whether it be perceived (mental) or physical stressors (toxins, certain foods, exercise, injuries, etc.), the mind and body are so closely intertwined that either form of stress creates a physiological response in the body as seen here in the diagram thanks to Dr. Ryan Lowery 🤓

When I began this journey of holistic health, it was based on fear of the brain tumor coming back. The irony of that is that 4 more grew back over the following 7 years after brain surgery.

My journey led me to nutrition first, which I believed was the single most important choice we have on a daily basis.🥑

Then a torn ACL injury & surgery led me to the importance of fitness for the brain and body.💪🏽

Along the way, I was learning more about keto as well as the power of our mindsets and subconsciously picking up on new ways of thinking.🧠

Today, I believe the mind(set) is actually the single most important choice we have on a daily basis, closely followed up by nutrition and fitness. The mind(set) came last for me and I believe it was for a few reasons:

1- to show me my strength through the physical challenges.

2- those challenges gave me clarity on perspective & purpose.

3- I was building my mind(set) strength the whole time and now that I’m conscious to it, I am able to tie all 3 parts of holistic health together and share with all of you.

Keto Doesn’t Require Tons Of Fat.

There’s a misconception that Keto requires a ton of fat at every meal.

When you’re first beginning your ketogenic diet & lifestyle journey, you’ll be adding WAY MORE fat than most are used to consuming, which brings mindset obstacles, such as conditioning to believe fat makes us fat, to the surface.

That’s entirely false, while in the right context. When starches, sugars, & high-levels of carbohydrates are absent, fat allows our brains & bodies to thrive.

Again, while starting out on a ketogenic diet there will be an adjustment period that requires you to fuel your body with fat to satiety, thus meaning you’ll most likely be eating a fair amount of fat. But, once fat-adapted, you start to notice shifts in hunger, energy levels, mental clarity, weight removing, & improved sleep & digestion & no longer require a ton of fat at every meal.

The adaptation process takes time & is different for each individual.

The other piece of context is “what is your goal”? If you’re trying to maintain weight, or bulk, once fat-adapted, then you’re probably going to need a lot more fat at each meal (or in total for the day) then someone who’s trying to remove weight & body fat.

This meal represents effort to cut some body fat % as I’m fat adapted= not so much fat🔥

It’s all in context to the individuals goals & needs. There’s no one size fits all here.

Thermometer or Thermostat

I believe we all have a choice.

A choice to become a survivor or a victim. React to life or be proactive in life.

I love how Jim Kwik puts it as comparing a thermostat to a thermometer. A thermostat controls the environment and a thermometer reacts to an environment.

I know we can’t control our lives but we can control our choices, which will manifest a reality one way or another. Or choices in food, thoughts, and physical activity.

We can choose to be proactive and prevent unwanted realities, or we can live our lives in auto-pilot and react to events as they come. I choose to follow a ketogenic diet & lifestyle for my 🧠, choose to educate myself on a daily basis, choose to serve others and help support them, and choose to hold myself accountable for my reality.

I was living my life as a thermometer and just reacting to my environment until I was 21 and told I was going to die from a massive brain tumor taking residence on the left half of my brain. It took that life or death situation to audit my choices, foster self-awareness, and make the choice to become empowered over my reality.

I share not to brag, but to inspire you all to take action as a thermostat for your life rather than reacting to your life environment/reality as a thermometer.

I don’t want others to suffer as I did and be forced to react to a situation. I want your choices to come from move rather than fear.

BMX to Inspiration

It was a dream to become a pro BMX athlete one day and do this trick I grew up seeing Dave Mirra do.

A version of this trick (performed on the ramp to the left of this photo) actually saved my life when I fell and hit my head and needed an MRI. Backstory leading up to that point, I’d been in and out of the doctors office complaining of headaches, vision loss, and vomiting while also requesting a scan but denied and prescribed pain pills told “you’re young, in shape, and just have headaches”.

Fast forward to that crash I mentioned and the MRI that followed, who knew. I was diagnosed at the younger age of 21 with a massive brain tumor taking over half my brain and residing on my optic nerve and wrapped around an artery in my brian.

I’ve been able to transcend my dreams and inspire action in others around the world with nutrition, fitness, and mindset shifts from my experiences like what I just shared above, and I’m extremely honored and grateful for that fact.

Had I not set out to create my own path in life, who knows how many regrets I’d live with today and how many lives I may have not changed for the better.

Today, I live with 4 brain tumors (2 more brain tumor diagnosis since the original surgery) and have used Elekta Gamma Knife to shrink 2 and ketogenic diet and lifestyle to stabilize the other 2. I don’t compete anymore (personal choice) but I still ride at the same level (seen here), coach others, and am a motivational speaker.
